7.30pmThe Queen of Scots …
in my End is my Beginning
This latest Alba offering is a lyrical rendering of the quite tragic story of one of Scotland’s great female visionaries- Mary, Queen of Scots.
This captivating play is set in different locations in and around Edinburgh…Holyrood Castle , Craigmillar Castle, Dunbar Castle and in the High Street of Edinburgh.
The heart-rending story is given a typically ‘Albaesque’ treatment, bringing it right up to date in style since it’s first production at the Glasgow Citizen’s Theatre in 1951.
Written in a light poetic Scots by the remarkable McLellan (Flooers o’ Edinburgh, Jamie the Saxt, The Carlin Moth), the influences of France, England, and of course Scotland, are prevalent – the machinations of politics then are seen to be perhaps not so very different than of today!

Robert McLellan – “No playwright did more to create touchstone plays on Scottish subjects for Scottish actors on a Scottish stage … No writer then or since has represented aspirations for Scottish self-expression in the theatre arts with greater popular effect” – Colin Donati
